Review Glass Kanin

Oh my gosh, you guys, I just finished reading Glass Kanin: An Isekai LitRPG Adventure, and I'm still buzzing! This book completely charmed me from beginning to end. The premise alone – a struggling actor isekai'd into a bottle of ink – is wonderfully absurd, and it immediately hooked me. I wasn't expecting the sheer amount of heart this story packs, though. It's hilarious, genuinely suspenseful at times, and surprisingly poignant.

Kanin, our main character, is just so relatable. He's got that scrappy underdog energy that makes you root for him instantly, even when he's literally a tiny ink bottle facing down a shadow monster. His journey isn't just about escaping his predicament; it's about reclaiming his agency and figuring out what it means to be human, even when your existence is utterly unconventional. The world-building is fantastic too; Kia Leep has crafted this truly unique setting that blends whimsy and horror in a way that feels both fresh and familiar. Think Studio Ghibli meets a slightly darker, more mature LitRPG.

The supporting characters are equally fantastic, and I especially loved Noli, the elf trapped in a toy octopus. Their dynamic with Kanin is so much fun; their bickering, their support, their shared desperation – it all felt so authentic and real. The inclusion of diverse and LGBTQIA+ characters feels organic and natural, never forced or tokenistic, which I greatly appreciated. It enriched the story in ways that went beyond simple representation; it made the world feel more alive and vibrant.

The LitRPG elements are woven seamlessly into the narrative. The leveling system, the skills, the inventory – it all enhanced the story rather than overshadowing it. It never felt overwhelming or clunky, which is a common pitfall in the genre. Instead, it added another layer of engaging gameplay to Kanin’s desperate struggle for survival. And speaking of survival, the stakes felt real. The threat of the shadow monster was genuinely creepy, and there were several moments that had me on the edge of my seat. I found myself genuinely invested in their survival, gasping at close calls and cheering at their clever escapes.

While the story has its tense moments, the overall tone is surprisingly light and upbeat. There's a pervasive sense of hope and determination, even amidst the darkest moments. It's a testament to Leep's skill as a writer that she can balance these conflicting elements so effectively. The story is a genuinely enjoyable rollercoaster – a wild ride of emotions that you won’t want to end.

Honestly, I can’t recommend Glass Kanin enough. It’s funny, engaging, heartwarming, and surprisingly thought-provoking. If you're looking for a unique Isekai LitRPG with strong characters, engaging world-building, and a healthy dose of queer representation, then look no further. Five stars, easily!
